Frequently Asked

Pharmacy Technician questions, answered.

  • Is the PTCB a real credential?

Yes — Pharmacy Technician Certification Board is the national gold standard. Every major pharmacy hires on PTCB certification. Alabama Board of Pharmacy accepts it for state registration. It's what separates $15/hr retail techs from $22/hr hospital techs.

  • Do I need math skills?

Basic algebra helps. We teach pharmacy math from scratch — ratios, dosage calculations, dilutions. If you can handle high school math, you'll pass the PTCB math section after the program.

  • Can I work at any pharmacy with this cert?

Yes. PTCB CPhT is recognized in all 50 states. CVS, Walgreens, Publix, hospitals, long-term care, compounding pharmacies — they all hire PTCB techs. You're portable.

  • What if I have something on my record?

Alabama Board of Pharmacy reviews criminal history during registration. Minor offenses older than 7 years usually aren't a problem. Felonies involving controlled substances are a real barrier. Call us — we'll help you figure out what's possible.

  • How does the externship work?

You train 100+ hours at a real pharmacy — retail, hospital, or compounding. You're paired with a licensed pharmacist. It's not a paid job, but it's the most important part of your education: you leave with real experience on your resume.

  • Can I work from home?

Not as a pharmacy tech — the work is physical and hands-on. Mail-order and specialty pharmacy roles exist (filling scripts for chronic-care patients) with limited remote components, but most Alabama grads work in retail or hospital settings in person.

  • What if I fail the PTCB exam?

You can retake it — up to three attempts in a year. Our voucher covers the first sitting. If you need a second attempt, our advisors walk you through the retake process and provide extra practice materials.

  • Which Alabama pharmacies pay the most?

Hospital inpatient pharmacies pay the highest — UAB, Huntsville Hospital, DCH, and the other major systems. Specialty and compounding pharmacies also pay well. Retail (CVS, Walgreens, Publix) is the starting tier but has the most openings. Most grads start retail and move to hospital within 18 months.
